Good read. Nice short chapters so you can easily stop at the end of a chapter instead of in the middle. This is a title in the Loon Lake Mystery series and while you can read it alone like many other series it is better to have read the previous books. Although I started the series a few books in and then had to go back to read them all. I should also admit that Northwoods Wisconsin is my favorite place to be. While Loon Lake is fictional, it is fun seeing reference to many real towns in the area. When you read the book you can feel and see the vision clearly in your mind.Tags : Dead Lil' Hustler: A Loon Lake Mystery - Kindle edition by Victoria Houston. Dead Lil' Hustler A Loon Lake Mystery edition by Victoria Houston Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews
I have most of the books in this series. Each one is a fast read and keeps you wondering right till the end.
Very proud of our local WI author. Her newer books have too many grammatical errors, which is annoying, but the stories are easy and fun to read.
Really like the series but the plot seems to have lost any development in the relationship between the sheriff and the dentist. Each story seems shorter than the one before it and simpler. That is all a recipe for an author who is running out of steam.
I have read all of Victoria Houstons Loon Lke Mysterys and have loved most of them. This one was well done and had the twists and relationships I have come to expect. It takes place in Northern WI and includes a little fishing into. I have fallen in love with the people in these books and enjoy her books. They are an easy read with no expllicit sex or bad language and are ones I always look forward to. So glad they finally came out in . Love it!
We have read Victoria since her first book and loved them all.
The first 2 or 3 were the best as all the characters and location was brand spanking new.
I'm not criticizing but she does write to a formula.
But then we read for the characters she has created and not so much to see "who-done-it".
In my opinion one of the worst things a series writer can do is to "rewrite history". It breaks the continuity of the story line and leaves the feeling that the Author has either forgotten what was written in earlier works or for some reason wants to change it. It was well established in the first book that Lew was the Chief of Police when she and Doc met on a river for a fly fishing lesson. Why say other wise 14 books later? There were other similar "breaks" throughout the book that I found very distracting. This book had such a different "feel" to it that I ended up wondering if it wasn't the work of a ghost writer. Overall it just wasn't up to par for this wonderful series.
I have been a fan of Victoria Houston for several years and have read all of her Loon Lake mysteries. I have noticed a trend in the last few novels of rushing through the story. It seems that she begins with a promising plot and, after so many adventures, well developed characters, but does not allow her stories to reach their full potential. I don't know if the publisher is limiting the length of the books, or if she is tiring of the series. It just felt hurried.
I enjoyed the novel, but was left wanting more depth.
