Calcutta, 1919. Captain Sam Wyndham, a former Scotland Yard detective new to India, is confronted with a highly charged case a senior British official has been found murdered, in his mouth a note warning the British to quit India, or else...

The winner of the Harvill Secker/Daily Telegraph crime writing competition

Captain Sam Wyndham, former Scotland Yard detective, is a new arrival to Calcutta. Desperately seeking a fresh start after his experiences during the Great War, Wyndham has been recruited to head up a new post in the police force. But with barely a moment to acclimatise to his new life or to deal with the ghosts which still haunt him, Wyndham is caught up in a murder investigation that will take him into the dark underbelly of the British Raj.

A senior official has been murdered, and a note left in his mouth warns the British to quit India or else. With rising political dissent and the stability of the Raj under threat, Wyndham and his two new colleagues - arrogant Inspector Digby and British-educated, but Indian-born Sargeant Banerjee, one of the few Indians to be recruited into the new CID - embark on an investigation that will take them from the luxurious parlours of wealthy British traders to the seedy opium dens of the city.

The start of an atmospheric and enticing new historical crime series.

A good historical novel can teach as well as entertain. And certainly Abir Mukherjee does both in his first novel, "A Rising Man". Set in Calcutta in the British Raj in 1919, the book features former Scotland Yard detective Sam Wyndham, who has moved to Calcutta after his service in the Great War and the subsequent death of his young wife from influenza.e story is part police procedural and part of fish-out-of-water becomes attuned to his new surroundings, There is a sequel to "A Rising Man" due to be published in Summer, 2017.

Captain Sam Wyndham is an attractive main character, who learns about Bengali Calcutta as he hunts a murderer and a train robber. Mukherjee gives the reader a wonderful look at 1919 Calcutta with the politics of the Indian independence movement butting heads with the complacent British Raj. What Sam learns, the reader learns. as well. The supporting characters are well drawn and interesting. I'm looking forward to Abir Mukherjee's newest novel in the series.

A Rising Man Abir Mukherjee 9781910701898 Books Reviews

Came across the author on the internet. He had a laid back sense of humor. This and the fact that the book is a mystery and set in early 20th Century India made me want to give it a try. I wasn't disappointed. Atmosphere, great characters, plot and humor - the book has it all. Abir Mukherjee is my new favorite author.
I didn't know this book was missing from my life until I read it. Fantastic new mystery author for me--hooray! The flawed Captain Wyndham is a detective to root for. His second in command is a complex fellow who complements him well. I loved the plot and pacing. I've bought this book as a gift and hand sold it several times over. The setting makes me feel like I'm in sticky Calcutta sweating out the chase with the detectives. I'm impatient for his second book. More please!
Great sense of place and time. Historically accurate. Good detective story. Lots of intriguing moral dilemmas presented but not solved.
I don't usually read police stories, this book sounded interesting. I was right. The very descriptive writing made you feel the heat and sounds of India indeed the very life in India during the 1920's an easy read but it kept you guessing what happened next, would the path of truth and justice prevail, read it and find out.
This has got to be just about the best introductory mysterey by a new author that I've ever read. A sardonic sense of humor blends with a well tuned sense of place, not just geographically, but culturally. In the midst of an unjust and decaying system that puts a huge populace under the heel of British colonialism, the author is able to lead the reader through twisted alleys and social strata in search of a killer.
Also, it's just a great read; I'm looking forward to the second of the series.
Maybe 3.5 stars. A good detective story but it lacked the edginess ( I can't really think of how to explain what I mean) that I like in novels set in SE Asia. The editing was atrocious - no spaces after periods, missing pronouns and randomly odd upper and lower case letters and incorrect tense. If there is another book coming, I would give it a go. The characters were likable though they seemed reminiscent of the Department Q novels.
This was a thoroughly enjoyable read, and I’m looking forward to the next book. I have to mention, however, the very odd proofreading lapses. In particular, the absence of the “I” in a conversational “I said” occurs frequently. (“We need to see Buchan again,” said finally.”) There’s also the recurring absence of apostrophes.(“company thats registered”) Then there are the typos “WeVe no evidence.” I don’t know if these issues are limited just to the e-book, but someone needs to go over the text one more time to get rid of the annoying glitches.

Again, this has the potential to be a very good series.
