Phaedrus is back. Not satisfied with naming the unameable, he now must subdivide that which cannot be subdivided. The thrust of this book is a devlopment of a 'metaphysics of Quality." Quality is that nameless indirectly percievable reality Pirsig went to great lengths to show us in "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance (ZAMM)." Without ZAMM under your belt, "Lila" will be meaningless babble to you. So if you have not read ZAMM, stop reading this review, and go directly to ZAMM page. It also is a good read; you will not be disappointed.I am not the intellectual giant that Pirsig is. Before reading Lila, I didn't even know what a metaphysics was; so don't let that stop you. Like ZAMM, "Lila" is a full blown book on philosophy intertwined with a novella, the plot of which serves to drive the orations of the author, and provide case study-like material for the reader.
Phaedrus, having abandoned his motorcycle for a sailboat, is sailing for Mexico and pondering his next book which will be a "metaphysics of Quality" or maybe about Indians. At any rate, at a port bar he picks up a woman that you and I would not consider exactly a "high class" individual. Between Lila and her acquantances, Pirsig offers us an illustration of the different types of Quality. Dynamic versus Static patterns, social versus biological versus intellectual. He weaves a metaphysics that if not true, at least throws everything from quantum mechanics and artificial intelligence to social reform and madness into a strange new light. A light which on the surface seems to illuminate things very clearly. The downside is that the path to this illumination is a bit harder to follow than in his previous book. Consequently, I had to "just accept" some points as opposed to "really digging" them. And that has left a feeling that maybe something is missing in this philosophy. But my gut says it's me that is broke, not the book. Probably just means I need to read it again, which I intend to do.
Pirsig's writting is still beautiful. Can't describe why. It just feels good in your brain when you read his words. They flow together, and he has a talent with developing characters you can really feel. After finishing the book I carried it around for a couple of days, thinking it was kind of like an old friend.
So, in conclusion I must say that Lila is very good. It carries a grand concept that ties love, quarks, and madness with the same strings. So important is this book, that I have added it to my list of required reading for total cosmic understanding. Other members of that list are, "A Brief History of Time"-Hawking, "Chaos-A Foundation of a New Science"-Glieck, and "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maitenance"-Pirsig's first contribution. This pool of literature is guaranteed to put you in your place in the universe. What you might find however, is that "getting drunk, picking up bar girls, and writing books about metaphysics" are all just a part of life.

Lila An Inquiry Into Morals Robert M Pirsig 9780553299618 Books Reviews
I can't recommend this book enough. The framework on morals, and the value patterns discussed bring meaning and understanding to everyday life. It has shaped how I view the world more than any other.
If you’re so intrigued by Pirsig and you just cant get enough then go ahead and read Lila...its really just OK, meh...there is a philosophical purpose but after 200 pages I just got disinterested...the story meanders and he just seems to be making it up as he goes along...I stopped caring around page 200. Sorry, its sort of a dud.
This is really two books combined into one.
The first, the saga of Phaedus and his anti-muse Lila is a good read that is too short and ends too soon.
The second involves a dialectic that contains moments of brilliant insight (particularly with regards to the importance of Native American culture) mixed with navel gazing. The "home run" epiphany at the end of the book is more of a ground rule double.
Doesn't get the attention that ZAMM gets, probably because it is significantly less accessible. But the ideas expressed in here are profound, and the effort expended in understanding them is greatly rewarded.
This sequel ( Phaedrus's story ) to Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance has been a big flop at the sales counter because of two reasons firstly the book starts off badly with a flimsy plot and then suddenly in the third chapter starts talking about American Indians ( any mention of American Indians causes a paralysis of the nervous system in a majority of westeners ) and secondly Pirsig, or rather, Phaedrus presents a "Metaphysics of Quality" that seems more and more like a "Metaphysics of Eastern Mysticism" as the book progresses, and could easily qualify as an "elaborately veiled Hinduism" with "Rta" being equated with "Quality" and Pirsig's complete identification and assimilation with Upnishadic philosophy, the four static levels almost identical to the four castes of the Hindu social system and the intellectual pundits representing the highest level of static quality of the intellectual level. But in the end he makes a remark that the Hindu understanding is a poor imitation of American Indian Mysticism ( which incidentally is what he wanted to explain through his metaphysics of quality in the first place ). There are two major flaws here firstly there is no such thing as American Indian Mysticism and secondly there is simply no comparison between Native American religion and Hinduism, they are worlds apart with nothing in common and complete divergence of beliefs, practices, attitudes and social behavior. This has been mostly overlooked, and consequently his metaphysics in theory as well as in practice ( by his followers ) is indistinguishable from eastern mystical doctrines where entire religious organisations sprout by the hundreds to mass manufacture mysticism experiencing dummies, and the supporting philosophies provided by the intellectual pundits justifying every heinous human action as just an insignificant part of a great cosmic drama of the divine called "Lila", which incidentally or ironically is the exact name given by Pirsig to his book. The book on the whole is a worth while read, if only for the contents of the third and fourth chapters that bring out the character of Verne Dusenberry and the resurrection of William James Sidis. The rest is in the author's own terms an intellectual web for the pseudo-intellectual to get entangled in, and if nothing else have some fancy terms to play around with. The more dangerous side effect of this is that frustrated intellectuals will take this metaphysics as an ultimate tool to justify everything. The parallels with Eastern religions is ominous. History repeats itself, the first time as tragedy and the second time as farce already the sanskrit symbol of "Rta" has become the icon of a cult. Now if some more terms can be borrowed and combined, pretty soon there will be a makeover of " the divine language of the master race" and a scripture containing "all the knowledge of the Universe".
