Gabe Gallagher is a sheriff in Mountain River, Oregon, and a single parent of an 11-year-old girl, Shelby. He's had a rough year. First his wife walked out on him, then his father died. He's been trying to run the Sheriff's Department, keep his father's fruit farm going until he can sell it, and be mother and father to Shelby.Laura Barrett is a paralegal working at one-man law firm in Portland. Gabe Gallagher is a long-time friend of her boss, and Russ has assigned Laura to Gabe to help him wind up his father's estate. This entails taking a complete inventory of Gabe's parents' house and putting the house on the market.
The two get off to a bad start when Gabe is late for their initial meeting, but Laura isn't the only one upset with Gabe. His daughter has been waiting for him, too. This isn't the first time Shelby has felt that she's at the bottom of her father's To Do list. She is one unhappy little girl. She's had as much upheaval in her life as her father, plus she's worried about losing him, too.
All the ingredients are present for a quintissential Flynn romance, but this one never took off for me. Gabe Gallagher's handling of his daughter was too insensitive to generate much sympathy for his plight on my part. I admit that his reaction to his wife's desertion and his father's death was realistic; it just didn't make him an appealing character.
The growing friendship between Shelby and Laura was well handled, but it wasn't enough to carry the book for me. However, while "The Home Love Built" wasn't up to Flynn's usual high standards, her excellent writing style kept it from being a chore to read. Readers who have recently lost a parent or grandparent may find it more appealing than I did.
